About SOFEI Champion
The SOFEI Champion is an award's program established in 2009 by the Ambassadors for Economic Independence (AFEI) giving circle. We honor women who broke barriers to create economic independence and stability for themselves and family through academic, business, career, or community achievement.
The Heart of a Champion
SOFEI Champions are nominated by individuals who can attest to their pathway to economic independence. Examples of their achievement(s) are:

Courage to leave an abusive relationship for safety and self-reliance
- Business owner who launched a successful business after a layoff resulting in employment opportunities for others
- Working mother who improved her earning power and career potential through educational attainment
- Single working mother who volunteers to help other mothers achieve economic independence
- Working mother who believes and engages in philanthropic activities for women and girls of the Washington region.
Champion Criteria
Six women of the Washington region (Washington DC, Maryland, or Virginia) are selected in January and honored during a reception during Women's History month based on the following criteria:

- Domestic Violence
- Educational Attainment
- Philanthropy
- Volunteerism

About AFEI
Established in 2009 by The SOFEI Group, AFEI is a 1 million giving circle designed to create economic independence for low-income women-led families of the Washington region through collective-giving and community-based grant making in: education, entrepreneurship, and transportation and child care assistance. Click here to become an AFEI member for women-led households vulnerable to the trend of poverty.
